Can you tell me about the piece you submitted for The Waialuan? What inspired it?

  • The idea of The Museless Artist arose from my writers block. I felt like every single note had to be perfect. After scrapping three other songs, I realized that I was trying to hard. From that, a song came to mind, the one I remixed for my song. The first minute and a half of The Museless Artist is filled with music references to represent the other songs I tried writing but ultimately scrapped. Then it moves to a more majestic and flowy tone to represent my breakthrough.  And then the song becomes more dramatic and forcing to show my rush to submit this project.

How would you describe your style or genre as a musician?

  • I don’t think I follow a genre of music, since all I do is remix and arrange music.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

  • A “group” called Halley Labs  is my main influence for the way I work and listen to music. What I found so interesting about Halley Labs is that despite the 27 “different” active artists that fall under Halley Labs, all their music is all made by one person. Those 27 artists are actually aliases from the same person. Their amazing music and dedication is what inspires me to make music and I really wished I was able to reference them more in my song.

What challenges did you face while creating or perfecting this submission?

  • Other than the writers block I had, the main problem I had with making The Museless Artist was making the melodies I mixed in to fit correctly. There are quite a few songs that I reference in this song, but most listeners won’t actually recognize most of them. I originally wanted more recognizable references in this song, but I ended up scrapping a lot of them because they never sounded the way I wanted to.

What instruments, software, or tools do you use to create your music?

  • I use a niche app on my phone called Medly. I would not recommend using it if you have any other useable device. Most of the cool features are locked behind a $5 subscription, and even with the subscription you’re still pretty limited in what you can do. I’m would use FL Studio if I actually had FL Studio.
